Habit Tracker With No Subscription

A habit tracker is a checklist with a date attached. It is worth asking why so many of them bill you every month forever — and what the alternatives actually cost over the years you will be using one.

Why Habit Apps Went Subscription

Two reasons, and one of them is fair. If an app runs servers — syncing your data, hosting accounts, powering social features — those servers cost money every month for as long as you use them. A one-time payment cannot fund an ongoing cost. Habitica running guilds and parties has a genuine recurring bill to pay, and charging a subscription for it is honest.

The other reason is that recurring revenue is simply a better business. Investors value it higher, it is more predictable, and a customer who forgets to cancel is worth more than one who paid once and is happy. That is why subscriptions spread to apps that have no recurring costs to cover.

The test is straightforward: does this app actually run infrastructure on your behalf? If it syncs across devices or hosts a community, yes, and a subscription is defensible. If it is storing a checklist on your own phone, there is no monthly cost to pass on — and the subscription is a pricing decision, not an engineering one.

What a Habit Tracker Costs Over Five Years

Habitica's $47.99 is its 12-month subscription tier, verified September 2026. Loop Habit Tracker is free and open source at every point on this table. Finch's tiers run $5.99 to $69.99 depending on plan, which is why it is not shown as a single line here.

How to Tell a Real One-Time Price From a Fake One

"One-time" is doing a lot of work in app marketing. These are the things actually worth checking before you pay.

Signs it is genuinely one-time
  • The App Store listing shows a non-consumable in-app purchase, not a subscription.
  • The price is stated as a single figure with no /month or /year attached.
  • It says restore purchases — you can reinstall on any device on the same store account.
  • There is no renewal date anywhere in your store subscription settings.
  • The feature list does not quietly depend on a server staying online.
Signs it is not
  • “Lifetime” that means the app's lifetime, not yours — it ends when the app does.
  • A one-time unlock that only covers the current major version, with v3 sold separately.
  • Consumable purchases: credits or coins you buy repeatedly.
  • Core features gated behind a separate subscription after the unlock.
  • An introductory one-time price that converts to a subscription after a term.

When a Subscription Is Worth Paying

If you want your habits synced across a phone, a tablet, and a laptop, with a server holding the canonical copy and recovering it when you lose a device, a subscription is the appropriate model and you should pay one. The company has a recurring cost and you are getting recurring value. Nothing about that is predatory.

The mismatch appears when an app charges monthly for something that runs entirely on your phone. Habiro's pricing follows directly from its architecture: 3.0 removed the backend, so there is no server bill, so there is nothing that would justify charging you every month. That is also why there is no free trial to forget to cancel — the free tier simply keeps working.

One-Time Purchase Habit Trackers: FAQ

Is there a habit tracker with no subscription?

Several. Loop Habit Tracker is completely free and open source. Habiro is free for 3 habits with a single $4.99 unlock. Streaks is $5.99 once. None of them will bill you again, which makes them unusual — most of the top habit apps on either store are subscriptions.

How much do habit tracker subscriptions actually cost?

Habitica's annual tier is $47.99, which is $239.95 over five years. Finch Plus is listed on the App Store in tiers from $5.99 to $69.99 depending on plan. Compared against a $4.99 one-time purchase, the gap over the life of the habit is the entire argument.

Is a one-time purchase habit tracker worse than a subscription one?

Not inherently — it depends on whether the app needs servers. A subscription funds ongoing infrastructure, so an app with sync and social features genuinely has costs to cover. An app that stores a checklist on your own phone does not, so a one-time price is the honest match for it.

What does Habiro's $4.99 unlock include?

Unlimited habits, 3 personal challenges at once, 3 Streak Shields, advanced insights, premium templates, and all themes — permanently. It is a non-consumable purchase, so it restores on any device signed into the same App Store or Google Play account. There is no renewal and no second tier.

Will Habiro add a subscription later?

There is nothing to fund one. Version 3.0 removed the backend entirely, so there are no servers, no per-user costs, and no hosting bill that grows as more people install it. The one-time unlock is the whole business model, which is why we deleted our backend.
